ABOUT ME

Hey Ya'll and welcome to Color-in-Books!
So now that you're here, what exactly is Color-n-Books? Glad you asked! Well, if you're old enough to remember the PBS show Reading Rainbow then imagine that, fused together with Oprah's Book Club, and you'll have a pretty good sense of what this blog is all about. (Of course, if you've never heard of Reading Rainbow or Oprah then, 1) check out a few episodes on YouTube of both Reading Rainbow and the Oprah Winfrey Show and then 2) don't admit it to anyone--particularly if you did not know who Oprah is. But no shame here, folks. We're just glad you stopped by.
In this corner of the web you'll find an array of culturally diverse children's books that feature black and brown children. Our goal is to highlight these books because it's important for all readers, young and old alike , to see a diverse representation in the stories they read and the characters they see. So pull up your favorite bean bag chair, grab a hot drink, get comfy, and let's share open a book!

FAQ:

1). Why the name Color-in-Books?

Well, I should probably give credit where credit is due ;-). My husband is actually the one who came up with the title and it actually has a double meaning: 1) it refers to the books featured on this site--children's books with diverse racial representations and 2) phonetically, the title sounds quite like a common fixture of childhood: coloring books.

2). How did you become interested in children's books?

Honestly, I became interested in children's books because of my kids. I have three bright and amazing kids and one of my earliest bonding activities with each of them was reading books and going to storytimes at public libraries, museums, and even a farm! I enjoyed reading with my kids and the books so much that I actually began keeping a list of my favorites on my phone so that I could share recommendations with others. And then it occurred to me perhaps blogging would allow me to share with a greater audience so in March 2020 just days after the pandemic was declared, I started this blog.
Prior to having kids, I was definitely a reader, but I didn't start reading children's books as an adult until I started reading with my kids.
